Chiesa di San Facio
Known as "del Foppone"
The church is dedicated to San Facio, but is commonly known as the church of Foppone.
The peculiarity of the building's history lies in the fact that it was designed and built (between 1758 and 1781) not only as a church but above all as a cemetery serving the hospital of Santa Maria della Pietà.
In fact, it was the hospital that not only promoted its construction but also managed the church from the mid-18th century until the 1970s, when the hospital functions were transferred to the new hospital.
The name by which the church is known, “Foppone”, derives from the structure's design, which was specifically intended for the burial of bodies (those of patients who died in the hospital).
The large pits dug under the portico in front of the church were called “foppe” in the local dialect, hence Foppone, meaning a large pit.
