The Città Murate (Walled Cities) track connects the two Lombardy Region parks Oglio Nord and Adda Sud and runs across the Navigli Valley. The project is integrated with the Serio Morto Valley Local and Inter-municipality Park and the itinerary reaches and involves Soncino, Genivolta, Soresina, Cappella Cantone, San Bassano, Formigara, Pizzighettone.
The Canale Vacchelli track unites three Lombardy Region Parks (Adda, Serio and Oglio Nord) and the Inter-municipal Parks "Moso" and "Tormo" and it crosses Genivolta, Cumignano in Naviglio, Trigolo, Fiesco, Salvirola, Izano, Crema, Cremosano, Trescore Cremasco, Bagnolo Cremasco, Vaiano Cremasco, Monte Cremasco, Palazzo Pignano, Dovera, Pandino, Spino D’Adda and Merlino (Lodi province).
The Po track is a path that runs inside the Golena del Po Local and Inter-municipal Park . This path starts in Cremona and ends in Casalmaggiore and it reaches Gerre de’ Caprioli, Stagno Lombardo, San Daniele Po, Motta Baluffi, Torricella del Pizzo, Martignana Po and Gussola.
The Antica Regina track unfolds on the old road Strada ex Castelleonese, restored and re-qualified; it starts from Cremona and reaches Castelverde, Costa Sant’Abramo, Sesto ed Uniti, Annicco and Soresina, where it joins with the Città Murate track.
The Postumia track, a cycling track that goes from Cremona to Calvatone following the route of the Roman Postumia road and that unites the province capital to the Oglio park is still being designed.
Whatever itinerary you choose, please remember to follow these rules which should always be followed when cycling:
• always wear a helmet • use a bike suitable for going on the type of road you've chosen • wear suitable clothing • do not weigh yourself down with heavy backpacks or bags but use bicycle rack bags • always be careful, even on bicycle-only tracks, because there might be authorised motor vehicles passing or even trespassers using the cycling track as a shortcut • use ordinary roads with motor traffic preferably from 9.00 to 11.30 a.m. and from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m. to avoid commuter traffic which may be very intense
We did not provide an elevation pattern for our tracks since they are chiefly flat tracks.
Ever since 1998 the Cremona Provincial Administration has been developing studies and researches focused on valorising its own territory; said researches include feasibility analyses for some bicycle routes.
Building the first four routes, which feature as many protected natural areas as possible, has been made easier by the presence of a previously existing network of secondary roads that connected channels, rivers, inland waterways and so on. Building and constant maintenance of a cycling road, in this context, shall be made focusing on proper management of territory, supervision of agricultural lands, environmental control and so on.
The Cremona plains cycling tracks are interesting from a natural, architectural and historical point of view. As regards nature, environment and landscapes, the paths cross a countryside which shows signs of heavy human modifications carried out over the centuries, with only some spots were the true face of nature is still (or again) visible. These are territory stretches located near water bodies or the remnants of now dried water bodies (bodri and lanche, small lakes surviving in areas where the Po once ran).
However, most of each track's route runs through the classic Po valley countryside, where even identifying the different types of human intervention found in the different provinces requires a good level of knowledge of one's own territory. As regards the historical aspect, this pertains chiefly to settlements (towns and hamlets or even isolated groups of farmhouses) that are crossed or bordered by the tracks. All these places, because of their state of preservation, type of settlement and quality require a slower, more meditative approach to tourism.
Because of this, we have highlighted the most relevant architectural features like palaces, churches, parish churches and so on and provided guests with suitable opportunities to visit and enjoy them. The itineraries proposed below do not aim to represent and/or cover all of the province's territory or resources but they do summarise factually ideas, projects and wishes of the subjects involved in their development. The first four paths form the "nerve" of the provincial territory, by connecting the provincial capital to the major cities, and they also connect together the river valleys and the sites representing an environmental/landscape emergency. These itineraries may be used as the roots on which a thick network of smaller tracks or itineraries, run by the municipalities, may be developed.
